I’ll give you an example. I’m from Canada I’ve heard alot of people from the States say that Canada is a "socialist‘ country and it is NOT AT ALL. We have universal health care that’s about it… and we have a Conservative federal government. So the perception is alot different from reality alot of the time.

I think you may want to investigate this topic on a case by case basis that way you can come to some of your own conclusions… no matter what political fence you sit on.

I will try to answer without telling you what is good or bad, right or wrong. I’ll leave that for you to decide.

Unlike previous answers, socialism does not mean a lack of freedom, nor does it mean a totalitarian big government control of society. That is the FOX News, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, right wing media answer.

With that said, it is important for me to properly define capitalism so that I can define socialism. Let me begin.

It can be said that the opposite of socialism is regarded as capitalism. Although no true opposite can be made to such a complex system as capitalism or socialism.

Socialism is an economic system where the wealth a society generates is shared among the workers.
Capitalism is an economic system where the wealth a society generates is taken by an individual, called a capitalist.

For example, a capitalist corporation consists of workers and an owner, or capitalist. The workers are paid a wage, based on their ability, skills and knowledge, and they produce product. That product is sold for a profit. The profits (also called net wealth or excess wealth) is kept by the owner.
A true capitalist does not work, he simply collects the profits, while the workers make those profits. A good example of some capitalists in our society are Mitt Romney, Bill Gates, or Donald Trump. These people do not work, but they own and collect profits (also called dividends) from their companies, which the workers work to create. It is important to realize and understand that a capitalist does not work. A worker must trade his time for money, called a wage. A capitalist does not do this. A capitalist makes all money from his capital, also called his company, trust, or whatever wealth he has. A worker works for money, a capitalist collects money from workers and lives off of the excess wealth created by them.

Most corporations in the USA are small businesses, and the owners are not true capitalists. The small business owner is called a BOURGEOIS proletariat. He is not a true capitalist because the small business owner must still work to create his profits. Whereas a true capitalist does not work at all.

Under socialism, or in a socialist cooperative corporation, there is no owner. Workers all work together to produce a product and the profits are shared equally at the end of the fiscal period. Workers are still paid different rates. Janitors will make lower wages than Engineers. Engineers will make lower wages than the CEO. But after all expenses are counted, and profits are realized, the profits will be spread evenly among all workers. It is important to note that under socialism, we would all be workers, there would be no capitalists.

For example, in 2008, AT&T made about 12 billion in profits. Since we live in a capitalist society, that 12 billion in profits were given to various stock holders and paid out as dividends to investors who do not work for AT&T, but own pieces of At&T via stock. The 300,000 workers at AT&T just received their normal wages, even though they worked to produce that extra 12 billion.

If AT&T were a socialist cooperative, there would be no foreign ownership of the company. The profits that AT&T created would not be given to stock holders, but would be divided up among the workers at AT&T. Thus, if AT&T were a cooperative, each worker would get an extra 40,000 dollars at the end of the year, in addition to his normal wages. So the Janitor at AT&T would get his salary of $30,000 a year, + a $40,000 share of the profits. Likewise, the CEO would still get his 1,700,000 salary, plus his $40,000 share of the profits.

In short, under capitalism wealth is given to the owners/capitalists. Under socialism, wealth is kept by the workers.

Now, Notice how I said nothing about government or freedom in my definitions. That is because capitalism and socialism are not political systems, they are economic systems. You can have a libertarian market socialist state, based on individual freedoms, like freedom of speech, expression, and religion. You can also have a government run capitalist state with no freedoms. Capitalist does not equal freedom, an socialism does not equal oppression.
